Glucose binds irreversibly to hemoglobin in the blood stream, creating a stable complex called glycated hemoglobin A1c. The average life of red blood cells is between 90 to 120 days, so A1C will only be eliminated when the red cells are replaced. The concentration of A1c is directly proportional to the glucose blood concentration over red cells life. Glycated hemoglobin concentration is independent from any daily variation of blood glucose monitoring. Hemoglobin A1c Testing Blood glucose monitoring helps to manage diabetes. Daily glucose check is inadequate to monitor the overall diabetes trend, for this reason, Glycohemoglobin is a valid indicator of metabolic control for diabetics and indicates a patient's blood sugar control over the last two to three months. What does HbA1c Test measure? Glycohemoglobin levels approach normal values for diabetics in metabolic control, HbA1c Test provides an indication of the average blood glucose levels for the past 2-3 months.
